Pothole problem leads to Troubleshooter call

Monday, August 05, 2013

Big potholes are causing big problems in one Johnston County subdivision. When residents couldn't get them filled, they got in touch with ABC11 Troubleshooter Diane Wilson.

The residents are upset because they say they are investing in their homes and want their neighborhood to be attractive, but their streets are anything but.

"It started as a small hole, just a nitch in the sidewalk," said resident Mark Kleinfelter.

While it may have started small, the pothole has grown.

"You can see it coming up and it's not going to get any better and it's working its way around the street," said Kleinfelter.

Kleinfelter lives in the South Forest subdivision in Johnston County and has been trying to get these potholes filled for several months. The developer of the neighborhood, Son-Lan Development still maintains the roads as Kleinfelter says the state won't take over the neighborhood streets until the developer is finished. The road maintenance agreement the developer signed back in 1995 states that the developer will maintain the roads until they're accepted by the state.

"I just want it fixed. I want it safe to the point where the county will adopt the roads," said Kleinfelter. "The school buses can go down it and these kids don't have to walk all the way down one of these major streets to get to school."

Kleinfelter says despite calling the developer several times, the potholes just got bigger.

"His response was 'OK, I'll come out and take a look at it,'" said Kleinfelter. "He never came out and looked at it, and then three or four phone calls later, 'I didn't have time. I'll be out there Monday.''[He] never came."

There was no fix. So Kleinfelter got in touch with me and I reached out to the developer. He said he was in the process of fixing it, and though it took a few weeks, Kelinfelter videotaped the crew finally filling several big pot holes.

"I'm happy that he did it as it makes it a little safer," said Kleinfelter.

He says he still wants the roads to be improved further.
