HENDERSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Vance County community had a strong reaction to advice from its sheriff on how to keep safe in an area plagued with crime.
Dozens of people lined up Friday to get their gun permits, many of them women. At one point the line was out the door at the Vance County Sheriff's Office.
A rash of crime has terrorized the community recently. There have been multiple carjackings, a rape, and a double murder.
Thursday night Sheriff Paul White addressed the community and told residents to take matters into their own hands in order to feel safe.
"There may come a time when you need to protect your children, your property, and I encourage you to do so," White said.
Many people are doing just that, and are frustrated with law enforcement's approach to handling the crime.
"It seems that the ones who are in authority aren't doing their jobs, so we have to learn to protect ourselves," concerned resident Armand Johnston said.
