Weekend snowfall blamed for accidents

Monday, February 18, 2013

At least a few traffic accidents over the weekend were related to icy patches on roadways and overpasses following Saturday's snowfall.

Authorities blamed icy roads and drunken driving for one fatal wreck in Charlotte, but for the most part, the snow caused few power outages and disruptions.

Areas to the north like Person County reported snow accumulations of as much as two inches, while areas of Wake saw an inch or less. However, with temperatures above freezing for most of the day, the snow generally didn't stick to paved roads and sidewalks.

The snow made it to areas that missed the first two storms in North Carolina this winter. Nearly four inches of snow fell in Charlotte in that city's first measurable snow since 2011. Wilmington also reported snow for the first time in two years.

After a clear, cold night Sunday night, Monday turns milder with sunshine much of the time and highs move to the lower 50s. Tuesday will have our next chance of rain, but after that rain, chilly weather will move in and make for a slightly cooler end of the week.
