Two dead, two injured in Robeson Co. shooting

RED SPRINGS, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities with the Robeson County Sheriff's Office are investigating an alleged domestic dispute left two people dead and two others injured Wednesday.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. at a home on N.C. Highway 211 West near Red Springs.

Authorities said they were called to the home after a woman claimed her husband was threatening to kill her.

When deputies arrived, they found 59-year-old Kathy Bullard and 55-year-old Donna Matteson shot to death at Bullard's home in what appeared to be a dispute involving the women's sons and Matteson's daughter-in-law.

Matteson's son, 31-year-old Joseph Matteson, had reportedly made his way to the home from Raeford, threatening to shoot his wife 24-year-old Kendra Matteson, who authorities said once dated the homeowner's son.

That man, 28-year-old Mark Anthony Bullard, was also found shot inside the house, but survived. He is currently being treated at a Chapel Hill hospital, but his condition is unknown.

Deputies found Joseph Matteson severely beaten and lying on the side of the road when they arrived.

His wife's 1 and 9-year-old children were also at the house, but were not injured.

Witnesses at the scene told authorities that Joseph Matteson shot his mother in the backyard with a hand gun, then shot Kathy Bullard inside her home, as well as Mark Anthony Bullard.

When Matteson ran out of ammunition, they said he chased his wife out of the house, where a struggle ensued between Matteson, Mark Anthony Bullard and a family friend, according to Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.

During the incident, a neighbor said Kendra Matteson ran to his barber shop for help.

"She just came in with the gun in her hand," Anthony Williams said. "She came to the parking lot with the gun in her hand, blood on her face, making a statement that she needed help. He had shot everybody in the house."

Authorities have not named Joseph Matteson as the shooter or filed any charges at this time.

Meanwhile, nearby residents said they were shocked to learn what happened and thought the gunshots they heard were from hunters.
