Eyewitness News

A remarkable discovery

Friday, April 26, 2013
Bill Ritters daily take on the news.

Bill Ritter's daily take on the news.

More than 11 years later - what a discovery. Part of a landing gear from one of the hijacked planes that crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11 was found today, wedged between two buildings in Lower Manhattan.

By coincidence, it's the former site of the would-have-been "Ground Zero Mosque" (a wrongly termed description, by the way).

With all the people taking surveys and walking and working and living in that area, how in the world did it take so much time to find this in-tact and rather large part? CLICK HERE to see it. Tonight at 11, we're digging deeper.

Also at 11, our investigative reporter Jim Hoffer has the disturbing story of the largest oil refinery on the East Coast, in New Jersey, and the new safety questions that are being raised. It's especially timely in light of those explosions at a fertilizer plant in Texas. Why are workers and residents worried about the lack of firefighting capabilities at the plant?

And Long Island College Hospital the only hospital for tens of thousands of people in two big neighborhoods in Brooklyn saved tonight. At least for now. The folks who run SUNY, which runs the hospital, withdrawing plans to close the hospital, even though it's losing money. Huge and determined protests from Brooklynites saved the day. Or the hospital.

And NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly today raising concerns about the questions we raised last night on Eyewitness News: Why did it take the FBI nearly 3 days to tell the NYPD that the Boston Bombers may have been planning to attack Times Square after the marathon attacks? The bureau and the NYPD have always had an uneasy relationship, but the questions are legitimate unless the FBI never felt the threat was anything but jibber jabber. Some sources say that may have been the case. But even then, an argument could be made that full disclosure of possible threats is the only way to go.

I'm just sayin'.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's weekend AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11, right after 20/20.
