Guns and scandals

Bill Ritters daily take on the news.

Bill Ritter's daily take on the news.

Just when you thought it was safe to wade calmly and peacefully into the issue of gun control without having verbal guns and loudmouths coming out ablazin' - watch out!

A lawsuit's been filed against New York's tough new gun control law, Connecticut passes tough new laws that will likely be challenged, and Pres. Obama, no longer running for office but campaigning nonetheless for stricter gun legislation on a national scale. Next week, he announced today, he'll head to Connecticut to speak out for gun control, and he'll be joined by families of the victims of the Sandy Hook gun massacre.

We'll have the latest on the gun control movement - and its opposition - tonight at 11.

Also at 11, we'll have the latest developments in a political scandal involving the race for New York Mayor. State Sen. Malcom Smith, a Democratic, was arrested by the FBI in an alleged plot to get his name - for a lot of cash - on the Republican ballot for mayor. Also busted: Republican City Councilman Dan Halloran, as well as the Bronx Republican, the Queens GOP vice chairman (and an aide to GOP mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis), and the Mayor of Spring Valley, Noramie Jasmin, and her Deputy Mayor, Joseph Desmaret.

A huge corruption mess, with more to come, according to sources, who say some of these folks busted are likely to start - how do you say? - singing.

We'll have the latest at 11.

Speaking of singing, there's some choice sounds caught on video of Mike Rice, head basketball coach at Rutgers, pushing and kicking and screaming obscenities and anti-gay slurs at his players during practice. The video explains why he was suspended for three games last December, even though the university called it only "inappropriate behavior and language." You can watch the tape (here's the link: http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/9125796/practice-video-shows-rutgers-basketball-coach-mike-rice-berated-pushed-used-slurs-players) and judge for yourself. We'll have reaction, at 11.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
