Bay Area food banks face turkey shortage

Bay Area food banks are facing a Thanksgiving turkey shortage.

With less than a week until the holiday, the San Francisco Food Bank is short more than 1,700 turkeys.

That's more than half the birds it needs for this year's traditional meal.

Volunteers were accepting donations at the Pennsylvania Avenue warehouse in San Francisco Saturday, as well as the Marin Food Bank in Novato.

The organization needs a total of 3,300 birds to distribute to 202 agencies in San Francisco and Marin.

"Cash donations are really appreciated. For every $1 dollar that's donated to us we can distribute $6 worth of food," San Francisco Food Bank representative Blain Johnson said.

The food bank provides turkeys to agencies like St. Anthony's dining room, Walden House and St. Vincent de Paul.

It will distribute about one million pounds of food this Thanksgiving holiday.
